About This Site

Top Dog Sports Agility publishes first-person notes on the gear a hobby handler actually uses at home: agility jumps and tunnels, tug toys, treat bags and flying discs. It is written for people starting out with a dog in a back yard, not for professional trainers.

Dog Sports Safety

Agility and disc games are physical, and they are not right for every dog. Talk to your veterinarian before you start, especially with a puppy, a senior dog or any dog with a joint, back or heart concern. Keep jumps low while a dog is learning, and do not ask a young dog to jump before your veterinarian says it is ready.

Train on grass or another surface with good footing, never on wet, slick or uneven ground. Stop in hot weather, keep sessions short and offer water. Stake a tunnel down every time so it cannot roll or shift with a dog inside it, and check the inside for standing water and debris. Use your own judgment about throwing a disc: low throws are safer than asking a dog to leap and twist. Tug toys and flying discs are for supervised play. Pick them up afterwards, and throw away any toy that is fraying or breaking apart before a dog can swallow a piece.
